Ruhrgebiet cycle tour: nature, enjoyment and industrial culture
Cycle through the Ruhrgebiet as everyone knows it, into the Ruhrgebiet as no one knows it. Former railroad lines become cycle paths, old industrial sites become monuments. Discover the idyllic Ruhr that gave this region its name and cycle along the old towpath. This cycle tour allows you to experience the contrast between industry and nature.
Day 1: From the Ruhr to the Zollern colliery in Dortmund (approx. 35 km)
On the day of arrival, you will cycle a circular route through the cities of Witten and Dortmund. From Witten, the tour takes you via the historic Haus Hohenstein and the mining monument to the former "Rheinischer Esel" railroad line. After approx. 22 km, you will reach the Zollern colliery in Dortmund. It is considered one of the most beautiful and extraordinary testimonies to Germany's industrial past. You return to the hotel via Haus Dellwig and the Rhenish Donkey.
Day 2: Mining and steel on the RuhrtalRadweg (approx. 41 km)
From the hotel, you start right away with a highlight of industrial culture: at the Nachtigall colliery, we take you back to the time when horizontal tunnels were driven into the slopes to mine the "black gold" and later the first shafts were dug into the depths. Today, the blast furnace at the Hattingen Henrichshütte is the oldest surviving blast furnace in the mining district. Afterwards, discover the quaint half-timbered houses of Hattingen's Altstadt. You return to the hotel via the historic towpath.
Day 3: Enjoy the green Ruhrgebiet: Wetter - Harkortsee - Herdecke (approx. 30 km)
On your last day, you set off from the hotel on a tour through the green Ruhrgebiet. One stop is the 13th century Wasserschloß Werdingen. It's worth taking a break here in the castle café. At the transition between Harkortsee and Hengsteysee, you change banks of the Ruhr at Herdecke and cycle back to the hotel via well-developed cycle paths along Harkortsee.
Conclusion: A perfect balance of nature experience and industrial culture!
