From Winterberg and Duisburg: One of the most varied and versatile rivers in Germany invites you to discover an entire region by bike with its riverside paths. No other river in Germany combines culture and nature in such a small space. On the 230 kilometers from its source near Winterberg to its mouth into the Rhine near Duisburg, the Ruhr connects the original landscape of the Sauerland with the exciting and eventful Ruhr metropolis.
Day 1: Arrival in Winterberg
Individual arrival in Winterberg and overnight stay.
Day 2: Winterberg - Arnsberg (approx. 70 km)
The Ruhrtal cycle path starts at the source of the Ruhr on the Ruhrkopf mountain. The ride takes you through the beautiful low mountain range landscape of the Sauerland. The Benedictine abbey in Meschede offers carefully selected, natural products. If you are in good physical condition, a detour to the Küppel mountain near Freienohl is worthwhile. The summit offers a fantastic view over the Arnsberg Forest. Overnight stay in Arnsberg. The well-preserved medieval Altstadt is unique in the area and invites you to stroll and linger.
Day 3: Arnsberg - Fröndenberg (approx. 35 km)
At Wickede, the wooded mountains of the Sauerland along the Haarstrang merge into the Börde landscape. Along the Hellweg you will find many old farms that have survived the centuries. Arrival in Fröndenberg, the "town of chains".
Day 4: Fröndenberg - Witten (approx. 50 km)
The route into the Ruhrgebiet leads past Schwerte. A historic grain distillery and the mustard museum are well worth a visit here. You cycle along the Hengstey and Harkot lakes to Witten.
Day 5: Witten - Essen (approx. 60 km)
The next day starts with a highlight of the Ruhr area: the Nachtigall colliery in the Muttental valley. Here you will experience the roots of Ruhr mining and even penetrate a real coal seam. Along the Kemnader reservoir, you will reach Hattingen. Not only is the historic Altstadt worth seeing here, but also the former Henrichshütte ironworks. On the way to your hotel in Essen, it is worth making a detour to Villa Hügel.
Day 6: Essen - Duisburg (approx. 30 km)
At Baldeneysee you will still find many witnesses to the beginnings of Ruhr mining. In Werden, the St. Ludgerus Abbey and the beautiful Altstadt of the over 1200-year-old town are impressive. Between Kettwig and Duisburg, the RuhrtalRadweg cycle path runs for 14 kilometers through the town of Mülheim. There is plenty of nature here, as only a small part of the banks of the Ruhr are built on, a historic water tower with a water museum and the Schloss Broich and Styrum castles. Duisburg, where the Ruhr flows into the Rhine, is home to Europe's largest inland port.
