Nature and culture from the source to the estuary
Let yourself drift with the current and get to know the Ruhr in all its facets. From the source of the Ruhr in the high Sauerland, the river is your companion on an impressive and varied tour to the mouth of the Rhine near Duisburg.
Day 1: Winterberg - Olsberg (20 km)
Travel to Winterberg on your own. To get you in the mood, you cycle a short stage through Hochsauerland with some short, steep climbs. The rose village of Assinghausen is worth a visit on the way.
Day 2: Olsberg - Arnsberg (52 km)
After passing picturesque Sauerland villages, you reach Arnsberg in the afternoon. The history of the Arnsberg counts, electors and Prussians comes to life between the castle ruins and the monastery district.
Day 3: Arnsberg - Schwerte (56 km)
Luminaries, manor houses and green meadows dominate the scenery along the middle reaches of the Ruhr. Behind the luminescent town of Neheim, the Ruhrtal opens up wide and quiet cycle paths lead you to the Altstadt (Old Town) of Schwerte. The mustard mill is famous and a visit to the unique Rohrmeisterei is well worthwhile.
4 Day: Schwerte - Hattingen (47 km)
Enjoy the leisure side of the Ruhrgebiet. Past the Hengstey, Harkort and Kemnader lakes, you reach picturesque Hattingen with its listed Altstadt.
Day 5: Hattingen - Mülheim (47 km)
The RuhrtalRadweg takes you along the beautiful Baldeneysee to Mülheim. There, the Camera Obscura and the Aquarius Wassermuseum are particularly inviting places to visit.
Day 6: Mülheim - Duisburg (18 km)
Today the Duisburg inner harbor is on the program and for those who like, a continuation of the journey to the mouth of the Ruhr into the Rhine near Duisburg with the striking sculpture "Rheinorange". You will then make your own way back home.
Conclusion: 6 days on the RuhrtalRadweg and you will see - a river couldn't be more exciting!
